The Sydney branch was founded in 1988 with the aim of bringing together people of Ligurian origin and background, and to help them to keep in touch with all things Ligurian.

The Association has been very active in maintaining cultural ties with Liguria:

In 1992 the Christopher Columbus exhibition was brought to Sydney to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. This exhibition was circulated widely throughout Sydney's public schools and libraries.
In 1996 the Association, together with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura of Sydney, celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Eugenio Montale, the Genoa-born poet and 1975 Nobel Prize winner (literature). Click here to read his biography.
When, in 1991, the University of Genoa conducted a study on the Ligurian migrants to Australia, the Association was a major source of data for the research. This reasearch was published in 1993 and titled "Dal Golfo Al Mondo".

The scholarships
Every year two scholarships organised by the Regione Liguria and the University of Genoa, are made available, through the Ligurians in the World Association, to students of Ligurian background.
The students will travel to Santa Margherita where, for five weeks, they will study the Italian language and culture in the land where their parents or grandparents came from.
